The exhibition showcased works from the 1980’s of the ‘new aesthetics’ brought over from the east which peaked during this decade. The aesthetics were based on the Japanese principles ‘wabi-sabi’ the principle of finding beauty in modesty and imperfection and ‘ma’ a concept that views voids between objects as rich and energised spaces. The three main designers associated with the eastern aesthetics are Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Rei kawakubo. For me the highlights of the exhibition were Naoya Hatakeyama’s photographs of a number of Comme De Garcon garments. The photographs were blown up, life size images of the garments which had been laid out flat and displayed next to the garments which were on mannequins. This gave you the opportunity to see exactly how Rei Kawakubo had used 2D shapes to create unusual 3D draping.
